Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a dresser that suits a period house and a kitchen that fits an uneven room.

A good part of the housing around Welling is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the original kitchen was probably small, and many have since been extended or opened up. A bespoke kitchen can be planned around the room as it is now.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. First, you tell us about the room. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The kitchen is made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It’s useful to have those trades booked in good time.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Questions from Welling

Is parking a problem for fitting in Welling?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Welling station?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

If the room is big enough, yes. We measure at the design visit to check there is room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

What bespoke kitchens cannot fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Welling homes and bespoke kitchens

About 75% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Welling went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Welling include Danson Park Mansion (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. All of London, Bexley included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Welling. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

If you live near Danson Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If you live in a period home close to St John's Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Why bespoke in Welling?

Larders, dressers and tall cupboards are hard to find in standard sizes that suit an older room. Bespoke joinery can be made for the exact space, with the same finish as the cabinets. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Welling

An extension or a knocked-through room is a common starting point. A new layout deserves a kitchen designed for it, and building work itself is for your builder.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • Room for everything in the kitchen
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances

Living in a block of flats near Welling station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
