Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lessness Heath?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Belvedere station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.

Bespoke kitchens in Lessness Heath: what you get

An island can be a good addition where there is space for one. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cabinets for a narrow kitchen and a dresser that suits a period house.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, floors, walls and ceilings vary from one home to the next. Cabinets are scribed and levelled on site so doors and drawers line up. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the finish is agreed in your quote.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Long kitchen shelves can sag under plates and jars, unless they’re built strong.

Larder and dresser units

They’re a good way to use an alcove or the end of a wall.

When you need someone else

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Building work, such as removing walls
  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Moving water or waste pipes

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Larders and dressers
  • Islands where space allows
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
  • Make sure an island won’t crowd the room
  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Measure the route into the kitchen not just the room. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about any narrow spots.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you tell us about the kitchen you have and the one you want.
  2. We come to measure up and plan the layout with you.
  3. You get a written quote for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out, for you to read through.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted in your home, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer do the plumbing, electrics and gas.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
