Questions from Barnehurst
Is parking a problem for fitting in Barnehurst?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Is Barnehurst in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?
Yes, we work across Bexley, Barnehurst included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
About our fitted wardrobes in Barnehurst
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and space under the eaves going to waste.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Barnehurst, bedrooms are often simple shapes, sometimes with a chimney breast or a bay. Fitted furniture can run along the longest wall, with the inside arranged to suit you. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom

Where other trades come in
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bedrooms in Barnehurst: local notes
About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Barnehurst went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 31% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Barnehurst include Parish Church of St Paulinus (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south-east, and One Bell Public House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Barnehurst (about 40%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.
Hall Place and Gardens, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Paulinus, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
- A written quote follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote

How it is made
Hanging rails
A long rail needs a support in the middle when it carries winter coats. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight wardrobe would leave in an older room.
