Bespoke kitchens for homes in Colliers Wood
We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an island where space allows and a kitchen finished in your colours.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and around Colliers Wood, a large share of homes are that age. Kitchen cabinets can go higher, with tall larders and top cupboards for occasional things. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the paint finish is agreed in your quote.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the kitchen we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Kitchens in Colliers Wood homes
In the area around Colliers Wood, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Colliers Wood. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Merton sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
If you live near Figge's Marsh, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. For families living near Sellincourt Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Gala Bingo Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Questions we are often asked
Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Colliers Wood?
Yes. Colliers Wood is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
My home in Colliers Wood is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do you do the plumbing and electrics?
No, those are jobs for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, while we make and fit the cabinets.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
How fitting works for bespoke kitchens
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
- You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics aren’t part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
- We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Getting a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- How big the furniture is
- The internal fittings
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.
Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Make a note of what you use every day
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Think about how the cabinets will get in
- Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.
Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. Their sizes shape the cabinets, and changing them later can mean changing the units.
