Questions from Colliers Wood
I live near Tooting station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
My house in Colliers Wood is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
What are the cupboards made of?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
How we make fitted cupboards for Colliers Wood
A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, and any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. We make fitted cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about making use of an awkward alcove or corner and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat.
Older homes like many around Colliers Wood have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of homes around Colliers Wood are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

What else we make in Colliers Wood
From workshop to your room
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.
- First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store.
- We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and go through the layout.
- You get a quote in writing for the cupboards we have agreed.
- Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Starting with a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
Fitted storage in Colliers Wood
Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Colliers Wood, with about 16% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Colliers Wood include Gala Bingo Club (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Waterfall House (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Colliers Wood. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 2.8 miles west. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. If you live in a flat close to Tooting station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

What it’s made from
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, because it stays flat and paints beautifully. It copes well in utility rooms and on cooler external walls.
What it costs
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The internal fittings
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
What to send when you contact us
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What the furniture needs to hold
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Landing shelves for bedding and towels
- Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
- Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
- Cupboards for a utility or boot room
If you live near Figge's Marsh, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
