Bespoke kitchens for homes in Furzedown
Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are making the most of a galley kitchen and a central island in a larger kitchen.
Sash windows and back doors to the garden are common in older kitchens. Around Furzedown, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, the layout is drawn around those fixed points. The sink position is agreed with your plumber. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You tell us about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
- We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
- We send a written quote.
- The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
- We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Could you do it yourself?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Furzedown
Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Furzedown?
Yes. Furzedown is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Wandsworth and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
My home in Furzedown is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Can you build an island in my kitchen?
If the room is big enough, yes. We measure at the design visit to check there is room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Made-to-measure kitchens in Furzedown
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Furzedown were built before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Streatham Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Furzedown. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Furzedown. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
If your children go to Graveney School or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. Close to Figge's Marsh? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.9 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf kitchens are quicker to buy and usually cost less and they suit many newer homes. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What we do not do
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Plumbing, which is for your plumber
- Wiring for appliances and lights
- Plastering, tiling or decorating
Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What goes into it
- Birch plywood
- Larders and dressers
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Islands where space allows
Looking after your furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Know your appliance sizes early
- Share the layout with your other trades
- Wipe up spills promptly
- Allow space to walk round an island
If a hand-painted door gets a chip, it can be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colours used.
Think about how the cabinets will get in. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about any narrow spots.
