Merton Abbey homes and bespoke kitchens

Homes built before 1919 make up about 34% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Merton Abbey, with about 27% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Merton Abbey, Historic England’s list includes Colour House at Misters Liberty's Print Works (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Wheel House at Misters Liberty's Printworks (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Merton is no exception. If your street in Merton Abbey is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If you live near Wandle Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. Southside House, about 2.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Merton Abbey is in the London Borough of Merton, about 2 miles north-west of Wimbledon. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Merton Abbey is part of that. We list Merton Abbey among 20 places we cover in Merton.

Every home in SW19, CR4 and SW17 is covered for bespoke kitchens, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Whether you live on a street such as East Road, Hardy Road and Mount Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for bespoke kitchens. The A24 runs close to Merton Abbey; on busy main roads, unloading kitchens takes a little planning. If you’re just outside Merton Abbey, we also cover Merton (1 mile west), Colliers Wood (1 mile north-east), South Wimbledon (1 mile north-west), Eastfields (1 mile east) and Tooting Bec (1 mile north-east). Across the rest of Merton, our area takes in Wimbledon (2 miles north-west), Morden (2 miles south-west), Crooked Billet (2 miles west), Bushey Mead (2 miles west), Copse Hill (2 miles west) and Mitcham (2 miles south-east).

Bespoke kitchens in Merton Abbey: what you get

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. We make kitchens from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets and spaces sized for your oven and fridge.

A kitchen gets more use than any other room, so the inside of the cabinets matters as much as the outside. Whatever your kitchen in Merton Abbey is like, the design visit starts with how you cook. Pan drawers, a larder and somewhere for the recycling are planned in early. Cabinets are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Merton Abbey?

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

Here’s what bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • An island where space allows
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets

For a family home near Haslemere Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Does a conservation area in or near Merton Abbey affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Haydons Road station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.

Will you connect the sink and appliances?

No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around their work.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

Yes, where there’s space. We measure during the design visit to check there’s room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we’ll say so.

Why bespoke in Merton Abbey?

Ready-made kitchens are widely available and often cheaper, and in a square modern room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they can be hard to fit neatly. Bespoke is a bigger investment, built around the space you have. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What you get with us

How we price bespoke kitchens

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What happens on fitting day

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters in drawers and shelves that carry weight. The edge can be left on show or painted.
