Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Bespoke kitchens in Copse Hill: what you get

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens well, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colours you choose. Most enquiries start with a dresser that suits a period house and a layout for a small or awkward room, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a semi or detached house, there may be space for a utility cupboard as well as the kitchen. Much of the housing around Copse Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Tall cupboards for the washing machine, coats and cleaning things can be made to match the kitchen. Plumbing for any appliance is for your plumber.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. First, you let us know about the room.
  2. We visit, measure and discuss the layout, larder, dresser or island.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

What we do not do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Larders and dressers
  • Spray-painted finish

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Copse Hill

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Copse Hill were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Copse Hill is partly covered by the Wimbledon West Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Merton included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Copse Hill. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. Close to Cottenham Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Southside House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Copse Hill is about 1 mile north-east of Wimbledon, part of the London Borough of Merton. From period terraces to newer flats in Copse Hill, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. In Merton, Copse Hill is one of the places we cover.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Copse Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Raynes Park station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Every kitchen is different, so we quote once we’ve measured. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. What you get is a kitchen planned around how you cook and live. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
