TV and media units for your home in Copse Hill

About our TV and media units in Copse Hill

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we plan open spaces for them. If your home has wasted space around the screen and a screen at the wrong height, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Copse Hill, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

What affects the price in Copse Hill

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

For a quote for TV and media units in Copse Hill, get in touch through our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we don’t do

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the design visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Living-room carpentry in Copse Hill: local notes

About 34% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Copse Hill went up before 1919, and about 33% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Copse Hill, 9 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 33% of homes in the area around Copse Hill date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where TV and media units go.

Living in a block of flats near Raynes Park station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Cottenham Park, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Common questions about TV and media units

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Raynes Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

The space can be sized for a larger TV. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

How do you hide the TV cables?

Cable routes are built into the design, with openings and access panels. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
