Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are making use of an awkward alcove or corner and storage for towels and bedding.

Some homes have eaves, some have bays and some have neither, but most have a recess, a landing or a corner that could take storage. Whatever kind of home yours is in Merton Abbey, we start by looking at what’s there. The storage is made at our workshop and fitted in your home.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan fitted cupboards. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. Treat the doors gently at first and avoid heavy cleaning. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease, and it is best done early.

Fitted storage in Merton Abbey

In the neighbourhood around Merton Abbey, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Wandle Valley Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Merton Abbey. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Merton is no exception. Depending on your street in Merton Abbey, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

If you live near Wandle Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Southside House, about 2.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If you live in a flat close to Haydons Road station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Questions from Merton Abbey

Does a conservation area in or near Merton Abbey affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in Merton Abbey. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the space. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

From workshop to your room

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, which can add a good deal of storage. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Spray-painted finish

For a smooth, even look, spray painting is a good choice, and it is done before the cupboards reach your home.

Where space is tight, we plan how each door swings, so nothing blocks the way.
