Built-in bookshelves in Merton Abbey
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. If your home has room for a record collection and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. Whatever kind of home you have in Merton Abbey, built-in bookshelves are planned around those first. Then the cupboards, shelves and any space for a screen are arranged for how you use the room.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Before fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Let us know about parking near your home

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Merton Abbey
About 34% of the homes in the streets around Merton Abbey went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. There are 15 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Merton Abbey. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 31% of households in the area around Merton Abbey live in terraced houses, according to Census 2021. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, which suit built-in bookshelves built to their exact widths.
Southside House, about 2.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For an older house near Christ Church Colliers Wood, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so it is already halfway to built in. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish, all planned for your room. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Merton Abbey
Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Off-the-shelf bookcases seldom have the right depth, so people turn to bespoke shelving.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- A room lined with books
- Shelves packed two rows deep
- Shelves that sag under books
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
For families living near Haslemere Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Merton Abbey
Does a conservation area in or near Merton Abbey affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Merton Abbey?
Yes. Merton Abbey is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What affects the price in Merton Abbey
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The number of doors and drawers
- The internal fittings
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Helping us understand the room
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What the furniture needs to hold
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
