Bespoke kitchens for homes in South Street
We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are making the most of a galley kitchen and a painted kitchen in a colour you choose.
A larger semi or detached house may have room for a utility area or boot room by the back door. Around South Street, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. Tall cupboards for the washing machine, coats and cleaning things can be made to match the kitchen. Plumbing for any appliance is for your plumber.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we’re often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Street?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Oxted station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?
Yes. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled, so the worktop you choose can sit level. It’s one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in South Street
Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. A larder or tall units can change how much you can store without crowding the room.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- A central island in a larger kitchen
- Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
- Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
- Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
Titsey Place, about 2.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Will the doors close with even gaps?

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
- We visit to measure and talk through the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish agreed.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets in another room while we work
Ask for a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
South Street homes and bespoke kitchens
In the area around South Street, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 29%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of South Street, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in South Street joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary the Virgin, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your children go to Charles Darwin School or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Deal with damp walls first
- Make a note of what you use every day
- Choose your appliances before the design is final
- Let us know how parking works on your street
If a hand-painted door gets a chip, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. Keep a note of the paint colours.
Measure the route into the kitchen as well as the room. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so tell us about tight turns or small lifts.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Your postcode and the borough
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
