Bespoke kitchens in North Cray

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and in a period house it can look as if it has always been there. Each dresser is made for its wall, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cabinets for a narrow kitchen and extra cupboard space.

Around North Cray, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses started with a small kitchen at the back that has since been extended or knocked through. The cabinets are designed for the room as it is today, with an island where space allows.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What it is made from

Larder and dresser units

A larder gives tall storage for food and small appliances, sized to what you store.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek look, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The kitchen is made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It is useful to have those trades booked in good time.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Related advice

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Talk to your other trades in good time
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Line up your other trades in good time. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What bespoke kitchens can’t fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Any work on the gas supply
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Kitchens in North Cray homes

In the streets around North Cray, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 44%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of North Cray is in the North Cray Village Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 67% of households in the neighbourhood around North Cray, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Hall Place and Gardens, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. For a family home near Royal Park Primary Academy, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. Close to Foots Cray Meadows? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Questions we’re often asked

Is North Cray in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, North Cray is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Cray?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we check this during the design visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, use our contact form.
