Built-in Bookshelves in Bakers Arms

We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Bakers Arms, designed around the room you have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Bakers Arms

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If your home has alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Bakers Arms went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about during the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How square the room is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How big the furniture is

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What to send when you contact us

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from Bakers Arms

My house in Bakers Arms is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Bakers Arms?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London, and Bakers Arms is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is made at our workshop first.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Living-room storage in Bakers Arms

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Bakers Arms were built before 1919 (about 61%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 11%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Bakers Arms, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Barnabas and St James the Greater (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Bakers Almshouses (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The share of homes built before 1919 around Bakers Arms, about 61%, is well above the figure for Waltham Forest as a whole, about 45%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of built-in bookshelves.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 2.5 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If you live in a flat close to Leyton Midland Road station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live in a period home close to St Stephen's, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought bookcases usually come in one depth, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
