Built-in bookshelves in Leytonstone

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves that sag under books and shelves packed two rows deep, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large share of the homes around Leytonstone were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Main rooms in houses like these usually have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives built-in bookshelves an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Questions we are often asked

Is Leytonstone in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, Leytonstone is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Leytonstone High Road station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that normally goes unused and can frame a window seat.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Leytonstone?

It’s easiest to use our contact form with some details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Built-in living-room furniture in Leytonstone

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Leytonstone. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Leytonstone. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Leytonstone High Road station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near George Tomlinson Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John the Baptist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Plumbing work around the shelves

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

How we price built-in bookshelves

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home
  • The number of doors and drawers

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Why bespoke in Leytonstone?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Why choose us

  • A design visit, then a quote in writing
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
