Built-in bookshelves in Holloway Down
Shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best. People usually come to us about somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and bookcases that lean or wobble, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Holloway Down date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why us?
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
- Built around your room
- Work across the whole of London
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Knocking through or altering walls
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Decorating the rest of the room
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
- We come to measure and discuss the design.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.
How to prepare
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Empty the space we will be working in
Arranging a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
- Mention any radiator on the wall
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf, and check the supports are fully seated.
Do not block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Heat needs to move into the room.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
I live near Maryland station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
My house in Holloway Down is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.
