For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Willesden Green include Church of St Andrew (Grade II*), under half a mile north, and St Andrew's Church School (Grade II), under half a mile north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Brent included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Willesden Green. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Willesden Green
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste and bowing shelves in an old bookcase.
Around Willesden Green, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Houses of that age usually have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for built-in bookshelves. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Looking after your furniture
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
- Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
- Mention anything very heavy, such as records or large art books
If you have adjustable shelves, move them when they’re empty.
If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Willesden Green
Is parking a problem for fitting in Willesden Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Do you cover homes near Kensal Rise station?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.
Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?
Yes. A bookcase around a door or window uses the whole wall. We measure the openings during the design visit.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
How fitting day works
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.
How to prepare
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Honest limits
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.
