Tooting Bec Built-in Bookshelves

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Built-in bookshelves in Tooting Bec: what you get

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are books piled on the floor and storage for children’s books and games.

With a large share of homes around Tooting Bec built before 1919, lots of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and strong, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on shelves and uprights.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above to suit what you own. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Tooting Bec?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Tooting Bec is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that usually goes unused.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, so many people mix depths. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. If a wall isn’t suitable, we will tell you.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Let us know where the heaviest things will go

If you have adjustable shelves, move them when they’re empty.

Don’t block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Heat needs to move into the room.
