About our built-in bookshelves in Tooting

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. If your home has space for art books and records and shelves that sag under books, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Rooms in houses from before 1919 tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Tooting date from then. Full-height built-in bookshelves can run up to the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. We size each shelf for its span and load, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Tooting

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Tooting?

Yes. Tooting is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Wandsworth and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Tooting affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It can be done, but it needs careful planning. Heat needs space to escape, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Tooting?

Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books

If you live in a flat close to Tooting station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Living-room carpentry in Tooting: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Tooting were built before 1919 (about 64%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List has 20 entries within half a mile of the centre of Tooting. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In Tooting, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

Close to Wandle Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a period home close to St Augustine, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

Most period walls need scribing. It’s what makes shelving look part of the room.

Shelves

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones can follow your books.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you are happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
