Built-in bookshelves in Merton: what you get
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If you are living with somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and space for art books and records, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Ceiling heights across London vary a lot, from tall period rooms to compact modern ones. However your room in Merton is built, the height is measured as carefully as the width, because it decides how tall built-in bookshelves can go. Each section is sized to fit the route into the room.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Fitting day, step by step
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.
- You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Advice
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. It has no grain to show through.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. The colour is agreed with you.
Living-room carpentry in Merton: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Merton were built before 1919 (about 42%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 19%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. 7 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Merton. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so the rest of London has its own. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.
Near listed buildings like London Regional Transport Station, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Merton, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Haydons Road station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Merton
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Haydons Road station?
Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Merton?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, with adjustable ones in between.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
