Built-in Bookshelves in Foots Cray

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Foots Cray starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelves deep enough for large books

About our built-in bookshelves in Foots Cray

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We work across London, including Foots Cray. If your home has a home library or study and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Many homes around Foots Cray date from the post-war decades. Post-war rooms tend to be squarer, with fewer alcoves and often no chimney breast. That makes a full wall of built-in bookshelves a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. Off-the-shelf furniture tends to leave gaps at the ends of a wall and space above it, while fitted furniture fills the space. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cupboards below
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books

Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Put the heaviest books on lower shelves and near uprights, which helps the shelves stay straight.

Don’t block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Heat needs to move into the room.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Foots Cray?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Foots Cray affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Which boards do you build with?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Frognal House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
