Northumberland Heath Built-in Bookshelves
Thinking about built-in bookshelves in Northumberland Heath? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing, before anything is made.
- Low shelves children can reach
- A room lined with books
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
Built-in bookshelves for your home in Northumberland Heath
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Northumberland Heath
Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top, and the same works around a window with a seat beneath it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are shelves that sag under books and low shelves children can reach.
A good part of the housing around Northumberland Heath is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls in houses of that age are typically straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The number of doors and drawers
- How square the room is
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Before the design visit
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, message us from the contact page.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
In older houses, we typically scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes shelving look part of the room.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.
Living-room storage in Northumberland Heath
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Northumberland Heath were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Northumberland Heath, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 54% of households in the area around Northumberland Heath live in detached or semi-detached houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Hall Place and Gardens, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For families living near King Henry School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Northumberland Heath
Is parking a problem for fitting in Northumberland Heath?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Barnehurst station?
Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall into sound structure. Where a wall cannot take the load, we’ll say so.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them, and that’s where bespoke shelving helps.
Here’s what built-in bookshelves can help with:
- A room lined with books
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Books piled on the floor

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Making good walls that can’t take fixings
- Relocating radiators or pipework
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
