Built-in bookshelves in Upper Ruxley: what you get

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are shelving that frames a window and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices.

Around Upper Ruxley, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the living room may be simpler in shape than a period room, with fewer mouldings to work around. That gives built-in bookshelves a clean line from floor to ceiling. Wall types can vary within one home, so we check each wall and choose fixings to suit it.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Arranging a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Questions from Upper Ruxley

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Upper Ruxley?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Upper Ruxley included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Upper Ruxley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How deep should bookshelves be?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, and a mix often works best. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

The wall is checked when we measure. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Upper Ruxley

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Mention any radiator on the wall
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records

On an outside wall, don’t pack books tight against the back so air can move. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. The cause is a job for the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.

Upper Ruxley homes and built-in bookshelves

It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 42% of households in the neighbourhood around Upper Ruxley, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Hall Place and Gardens, about 2.7 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live near Foots Cray Meadows, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a flat close to Swanley station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Shelves

Depth is set around what you keep, from shallow paperback shelves to deeper ones for records.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing means trimming the edges on site to meet the wall. This closes the gaps a straight bookcase would leave.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Concrete and block walls can make it hard to fix ready-made furniture securely, while fitted furniture is planned with the right fixings from the start. That matters for tall units and loaded shelves.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
