Built-in bookshelves in Sidcup: what you get
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it’s worth planning carefully. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so we do not box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it or have a plumber move it first. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are books with nowhere left to go and empty alcoves that could hold books.
A good share of the homes around Sidcup were built in the post-war years, between 1945 and the early 1970s. Post-war rooms tend to be squarer, with fewer alcoves and often no chimney breast. That makes a full wall of built-in bookshelves a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Some walls of that age are concrete or blockwork, and the fixings are matched to them.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for each. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it helps to tell us during the design visit.
- You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold.
- At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
- Tell us about parking and access at the design visit
- Tell us where the heaviest things will go
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along, to avoid marking the new finish.
Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves.
Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Making good walls that can’t take fixings
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Sidcup
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 30% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Sidcup, with about 20% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Sidcup, Historic England’s list includes Number 33 (farm Cottage) and Number 35 (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Caretaker's House at Lamorbey Park (Grade II), under half a mile north. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Bexley sets its own rules. Depending on your street in Sidcup, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Trinity Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Waring Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Sidcup is part of the London Borough of Bexley. Design visits and fitting in Sidcup can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our Bexley coverage includes Sidcup.
Design visits and fitting in DA14, DA15, SE9 and DA5 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You will find streets here such as Station Road, High Street and Jubilee Way, and homes on each of them are within our area for built-in bookshelves. Sidcup is near the A211 and A2001; on busy main roads, unloading built-in bookshelves takes a little planning. Nearby, we also make built-in bookshelves in Albany Park (1 mile south), Blendon (1 mile north-east), Foots Cray (1 mile south-east), Bexley (2 miles north-east) and North Cray (2 miles east). Elsewhere in Bexley, we also cover Welling (2 miles north), Erith (4 miles north-east), Belvedere (4 miles north-east), Northumberland Heath (4 miles north-east), Lessness Heath (4 miles north-east) and Bexleyheath (2 miles north-east). Sidcup is among the bigger places we cover in Bexley.
What’s near Sidcup
Our area takes in the homes around The Alma pub and Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, among other places. There’s a railway station in Sidcup itself: Sidcup station. A little further out are Queen Mary's Hospital (1 mile south) and Metropolitan Police Museum (under half a mile north-west).
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Storage for children’s books and games
- Shelving that frames a window
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
If you live in a flat close to Sidcup station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What to check before you book
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Flats, conversions and lettings
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Questions from Sidcup
Is Sidcup in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes. Sidcup is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
