Built-in bookshelves for your home in Welling

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Welling

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We work across London, including Welling. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about bookcases that lean or wobble and shelving behind a desk for books and files.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Welling, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it is a layout worth planning for. Built-in bookshelves typically go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, to suit the room. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Why us?

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Over 300 projects completed

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or how to compare quotes.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You send us some details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Ask for a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Welling

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

People normally get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Space for art books and records
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house

The wider area includes historic houses like Danson House, about 0.4 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Living-room storage in Welling

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Welling were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 75%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 9%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Welling, Historic England’s list includes Danson Park Mansion (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than half of the homes in the streets around Welling (about 75%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

If your children go to Danson Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live in a period home close to St John's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Welling

Is parking a problem for fitting in Welling?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

I live near Welling station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. We measure the openings at the design visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

We set the depth to suit what you own. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
