Built-in bookshelves for your home in Bexley

How we make built-in bookshelves for Bexley

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. We often mix the two. If your home has room for a record collection and bare walls that could hold shelving, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Bexley, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Bexley

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bexley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Bexley?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It’s possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Let us know about access early

Make a note of the paint colour used so any touch-ups match. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. The cause is a job for the right trade.

How it is made

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later, and it suits a traditional room.

Birch plywood

For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame that fixes securely to the wall.

What affects the price in Bexley

Several things affect the price:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The width and height of the space
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What to send when you contact us

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Built-in bookshelves in Bexley: local notes

In the streets around Bexley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bexley include Parish Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II), under half a mile east, and Styleman's Almshouses (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 45% of homes in the neighbourhood around Bexley date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

Red House, about 0.9 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Close to Danson Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a family home near Old Bexley Church of England School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.
