Need built-in bookshelves in North Cray?

Built-in bookshelves for homes in North Cray

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. A mix often works best. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are books with nowhere left to go and shelves that sag under books.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around North Cray, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Built-in bookshelves normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in North Cray

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around North Cray were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 44%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Cray. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bexley has its own. Depending on your street in North Cray, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like during the design visit.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Bath House to Rear of Number 112, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Hall Place and Gardens, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Foots Cray Meadows, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You let us know about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

How to get a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

What affects the price in North Cray

What you pay depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, so they can match the walls or stand out. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Albany Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.

Caring for painted furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now

Keep a record of the colour for future touch-ups. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Heat needs to move into the room.
