Built-in bookshelves in Hanworth, Richmond upon Thames

In Hanworth, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. Your built-in bookcase is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

About our built-in bookshelves in Hanworth

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and shelving behind a desk for books and files.

If you live in one of the post-war homes around Hanworth, a living room often has plain walls and simple skirtings, so there are fewer mouldings to cut around. Built-in bookshelves can run cleanly to the ceiling. Wall types can vary within one home, so we check each wall and choose fixings to suit it.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Questions from Hanworth

Do you cover homes near Hampton station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hanworth?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, and a mix often works best. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

How it’s made

Shelves

Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Where the building has a caretaker or managing agent, it is useful to tell them before fitting day. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. You contact us with some details about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it is built and plan spans and depths with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

Built-in bookshelves in Hanworth: local notes

About 35% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hanworth went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 31% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting

On an outside wall, don’t pack books tight against the back, to help avoid condensation. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it’s easier to deal with before it spreads.

Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Hanworth

Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

For a family home near Buckingham Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
