Working from home in Hanworth

About 35% of the homes in the area around Hanworth went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 31% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Hanworth is within about a quarter of a mile of the Hanworth Road Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Fewer homes around Hanworth date from before 1919 than across Richmond upon Thames: about 5%, against about 38%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We check what the walls are made of during the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

Close to Crane Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. The wider area includes historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.

Fitted home offices in Hanworth

Not every home has a spare room, but a wide landing or a loft room can work. A desk under a sloping ceiling needs careful planning so you can sit and stand comfortably. On a landing, it has to leave room to walk by. At the design visit in Hanworth, we will see what fits. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are paperwork and files with nowhere to go and a room with two jobs to do.

Wide windows are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, which suit a desk set along the window wall. Where there is a radiator under the window, the desk is kept clear of it. Because many homes around Hanworth date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, this arrangement is often worth a look.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Do you need fitted home offices in Hanworth?

Many people get in touch because they now work from home, at least part of the week. A kitchen table or a corner of the bedroom soon stops working. A fitted home office gives work a proper place.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Work things on show in the evening
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • Glare from a window on the screen

For a flat near Hampton station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

What we don’t do

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • Setting up computers, screens or networks

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Why bespoke in Hanworth?

A fitted office can combine a desk, shelving and cupboards in one design. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Fitted furniture is scribed over the skirting or set on its own plinth.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • More than 300 projects completed

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made or what to look for in a quote.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so home offices are made in sections sized for each. Tell us about any building rules on lifts or working hours during the design visit.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. Your office furniture is made at our workshop, sized for the room, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work, with the cable routes left open.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Hanworth

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in Hanworth?

Yes, Hanworth is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Hanworth affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

What materials do you use for home offices?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

Can you add power points to the desk?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. We design the desk with cable routes and leave room where sockets will go. It helps to agree the positions at the measuring visit.
