Built-in bookshelves for your home in Whitton

Built-in bookshelves in Whitton

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If your home has books with nowhere left to go and bookshelves in keeping with an older house, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Whitton, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for built-in bookshelves. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Spray painting or hand painting

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Getting in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we typically scribe the sides and the top. It gives built-in shelves their built-in look.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Whitton?

Yes, Whitton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Whitton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We choose the shelf thickness and material to suit, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, use our contact form.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

Why bespoke in Whitton?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, to suit the room. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why choose us

  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf and what a quote should include.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
  • Let us know where the heaviest things will go
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves so spills do not mark the paint. Dry any spills quickly.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Built-in bookshelves arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Arranging a design visit

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Living-room carpentry in Whitton: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Whitton were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 56%) and before 1919 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Whitton is in the Rosecraft Gardens Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. All of London, Richmond upon Thames included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Whitton fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

If you live near Crane Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. Near listed buildings like Brinsworth House, less than half a mile south of the centre of Whitton, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.
