Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.
Built-in bookshelves in Kew
In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves packed two rows deep and shelving behind a desk for books and files.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. A large share of the housing around Kew went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Questions from Kew
Is parking a problem for fitting in Kew?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
My home in Kew is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
What built-in bookshelves cannot fix
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. The colour is agreed with you.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight bookcase would leave.
Living-room storage in Kew
About 48% of the homes in the area around Kew went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List has 73 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kew. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. About 48% of homes in the neighbourhood around Kew were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving, with shelves sized so they do not sag under books.
Near listed buildings like Zoffany House, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Kew, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Kew Green? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For an older house near St Paul's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
