Built-in bookshelves in Hampton Hill, Richmond upon Thames
In Hampton Hill, we design built-in bookshelves around the room you actually have. We design your built-in bookcase at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.
- Shelves that sag under books
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- Shelves packed two rows deep
Built-in bookshelves designed for your room
What happens on fitting day
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so built-in bookshelves arrive in sections that fit through. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.
- You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- The sections are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Hampton Hill
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. People normally come to us about a home library or study and shelving that frames a window; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the walls behind built-in bookshelves could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, then choose the fixings. If your room has a chimney breast, the alcoves are an obvious place for built-in bookshelves; if not, a full wall works well.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What else we make in Hampton Hill
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Bought bookcases usually come in one depth. Bespoke shelving can mix depths. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, rather than where you need them. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Hampton Hill
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Fulwell station?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hampton Hill?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Can you build shelves over a doorway?
Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that’s often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.
When you need someone else
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Cupboards below
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Fixed and adjustable shelves
Caring for painted furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
- Let us know about access early
- Measure your tallest and deepest books
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
Load the shelves gradually and evenly. Put the heaviest books on lower shelves and near uprights, which helps the shelves stay straight.
Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Heat needs to move into the room.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving, with shelves sized so they don’t sag under books.
If your children go to Hampton Hill Junior School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For a flat near Fulwell station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. The wider area includes historic houses like Strawberry Hill House, about 1.2 miles north-east.
