Built-in bookshelves in Strawberry Hill

A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling. For a home in Strawberry Hill, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. People normally come to us about room for a record collection and storage for children’s books and games, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

With a large share of homes around Strawberry Hill built before 1919, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Strawberry Hill

About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Strawberry Hill went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Strawberry Hill, Historic England’s list includes Chapel in the Wood (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west, and Underground passage at Radnor Lodge (Grade II*), under half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Strawberry Hill (about 47%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving, with shelves sized so they don’t sag under books.

If you live near Marble Hill Park, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. Strawberry Hill House, about 0.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Strawberry Hill station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Questions from Strawberry Hill

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Strawberry Hill station?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Strawberry Hill affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It can be done, but it needs careful planning. Heat needs space to escape, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Fitting day, step by step

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

How we price built-in bookshelves

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The internal fittings
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

These details help when you contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. There’s no grain to show through the paint.
