About our built-in bookshelves in Teddington

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness and look solid, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two, with fixed shelves where the bookcase needs strength. Most enquiries start with space for art books and records and shelves that sag under books; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. A large share of the housing around Teddington went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Teddington

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Teddington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Teddington?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Teddington is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

How do I get started?

The first step is to message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Teddington?

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels, and can include a desk or a window seat.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • A room lined with books

Close to Bushy Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

What we do not do

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • Spray painting or hand painting

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
