Alcove units for your home in Holloway Down

Alcove units in Holloway Down

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, whichever suits the room. The plinth height can match the skirting for a tidy line around the room. We agree these details during the design visit. If you are living with standard units leaving gaps at the sides and room to work in an alcove, that is what alcove units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and alcove units need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Holloway Down, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the measuring visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 53% of homes in the area around Holloway Down were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Most London houses of that age have chimney breasts with an alcove either side in the main rooms, the classic place for alcove units, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity & St Augustine of Hippo, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. Close to West Ham Park? If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You send us some details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them, and a rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, checking how far the walls are out of square.
  3. We send a written quote for the units, for you to read through at your own pace.
  4. Each unit is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, ready for a spray-painted finish or for hand painting on site.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribing them to the walls, so they sit tight to the chimney breast.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints beautifully, which makes it our choice for doors and visible panels. It is a good match for alcoves on an external wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

Most alcoves need scribing on both sides and sometimes at the top. It’s the difference between a unit that sits in the alcove and one that belongs there.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

When you need someone else

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Treating damp in the chimney breast or walls
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Adjustable shelves

Common questions about alcove units

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Maryland station?

Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

My house in Holloway Down is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you fit a desk into an alcove?

Yes. Many people use one alcove for a desk and the other for cupboards if you want the two sides to differ. We’ll plan the desk around how you work.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?

Any vent is kept clear in the design. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

Either a spray-painted or a hand-painted finish. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We talk through both at the design visit.
