Built-in bookshelves in East Village, Newham

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in East Village starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Space for art books and records
  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

Built-in bookshelves in East Village: what you get

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in East Village, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves that could hold books and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices.

Most internal walls in homes from recent decades are plasterboard on studs, and the board alone isn’t meant for heavy loads. That matters around East Village, as many homes there date from 2000 onwards: heavier pieces stand on the floor and are fixed back into the studs.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

East Village homes and built-in bookshelves

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around East Village were built since 2000 (about 68%) and before 1919 (about 12%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of East Village include The Theatre Royal (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 12% of homes around East Village were built before 1919, well below the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

For families living near Chobham Academy, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For a flat near Stratford International station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

East Village is in the London Borough of Newham, about 2 miles south-east of Plaistow. How it is made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits bookshelves in an older house. The colour is agreed with you, and refreshing it later is straightforward.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase that fixes securely to the wall.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

My home in East Village is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is East Village in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and East Village is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We measure your largest books and plan the depths with you.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It is possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Families often need shelves for children’s books and games. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • A bare wall above a doorway

The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.8 miles west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What affects the price in East Village

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You contact us with some details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
  5. Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
