Need fitted cupboards in Kingston upon Thames?

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler

For a flat near Kingston station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How doors and drawers are fitted

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How we make fitted cupboards for Kingston upon Thames

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves set at the heights you choose. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. If you are living with a neat cupboard around the boiler and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Whether your home in Kingston upon Thames is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, there’s often a corner or recess not doing much. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Go easy on new doors for a while

A boiler cupboard should be left as it was designed, with nothing stored against the boiler or over its vents. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fitting day, we check the route in as well as the room, so fitted cupboards arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a written quote, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Questions from Kingston upon Thames

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Kingston upon Thames?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

I live near Kingston station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, with doors that open wide for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
