Hook Built-in Bookshelves

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Hook, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A room lined with books
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Space for art books and records

Built-in bookshelves for your home in Hook

About our built-in bookshelves in Hook

Bookshelves don’t have to stop at a doorway or a window. We can build shelves either side of a door and bridge them over it, or frame a window with a seat or desk below. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. If your home has shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and wasted wall space around a door or window, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, and around Hook, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Questions from Hook

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Chessington North station?

Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

The depth is set around your books. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

What you pay depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Where you live, with the postcode

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Hook

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hook were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hook include Orchard Court (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Kingston upon Thames sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Chessington North station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near St Paul's CofE Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Hook is about 3 miles north of Kingston upon Thames, part of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. From period terraces to newer flats in Hook, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Across Kingston upon Thames, we cover Hook.

Design visits and fitting in KT9, KT6 and KT10 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether you live on a street like Elm Road, Moor Lane and Glen Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for built-in bookshelves. Hook is near the A243; on busy main roads, unloading built-in bookshelves takes a little planning. Close by, we also work in Barwell (1 mile south-west) and Seething Wells (2 miles north). Across the rest of Kingston upon Thames, our area takes in Kingston upon Thames (3 miles north), Surbiton (2 miles north), New Malden (3 miles north-east), Hampton Wick (3 miles north), Norbiton (3 miles north) and Tolworth (2 miles north-east).

Local landmarks in Hook

Around Hook, we cover homes near Southborough High School and Shrewsbury House School. There’s a railway station in Hook itself: Chessington North station. A little further out are Tolworth Hospital (1.1 miles north-east) and Chessington Castle Hill (1 mile south-east). For a walk, there’s Bonesgate Open Space.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s a good choice for shelves that carry books. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought bookcases usually come in one depth, which may be too deep for paperbacks or too shallow for art books. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, message us from the contact page.
