How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Built-in bookshelves in Tolworth

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If your home has shelving that works with picture rails and cornices and empty alcoves that could hold books, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Tolworth, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.

Built-in bookshelves in Tolworth: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Tolworth were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 75%) and since 2000 (about 8%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Tolworth is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Tolworth station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Hogsmill LNR? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your children go to Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can dull the finish.

Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so during the design visit, so we can allow for it.

Could you do it yourself?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Tolworth?

Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Tolworth included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Tolworth station?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. If a wall is not suitable, we’ll tell you.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?

It can be done, but it needs careful planning. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
