Built-in bookshelves for homes in Aldersbrook

Homes built before 1919 make up about 55% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Aldersbrook, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Aldersbrook, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Church of St Gabriel (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than half of the homes in the area around Aldersbrook (about 55%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving.

Built-in bookshelves in Aldersbrook: what you get

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If you are living with shelves deep enough for large books and books with nowhere left to go, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and a large share of the homes around Aldersbrook date from then. That gives full-height built-in bookshelves room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Aldersbrook is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Aldersbrook?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London, and Aldersbrook is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.

What we do not do

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Plumbing work around the shelves

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

Shelves

Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Shorter bays are another answer.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Aldersbrook

Families often need shelves for children’s books and games. We can plan low shelves they can reach and higher shelves for later.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Room for a record collection
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

For a family home near Aldersbrook Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
