How we make loft storage for Leytonstone

A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. We will discuss the options in Leytonstone. If your home has a new loft conversion that needs storage and a boarded loft with no proper shelving, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Leytonstone, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so eaves cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.

  1. You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
  2. We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Arranging a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done on site once the storage is in. Small marks are simple to touch in later. That suits a room in daily use.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

FAQs: loft storage in Leytonstone

Do you make loft storage for homes in Leytonstone?

Yes, we work across Waltham Forest, Leytonstone included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

My house in Leytonstone is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The carcasses and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

The problems loft storage solve

Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It is ideal for things you need now and then.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • Unused space in a dormer
  • A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room

If you live in a period home close to Church of St John the Baptist, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

What loft storage can’t fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Approval for structural changes
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Converting the loft itself, which is not our work

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can use our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Sloped wardrobe tops

What affects the cost of loft storage

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The width and height of the space

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Making use of tricky spaces in Leytonstone

About 65% of the homes in the streets around Leytonstone went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 7 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Leytonstone. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. The share of homes built before 1919 around Leytonstone, about 65%, is well above the figure for Waltham Forest as a whole, about 45%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

Near listed buildings like Church of St John the Baptist, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Leytonstone, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to George Tomlinson Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
