Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, and that is worth weighing up. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Built-in bookshelves in Summerstown: what you get
Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so we don’t box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether or have a plumber move it first. If you are living with bowing shelves in an old bookcase and space for art books and records, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Summerstown, a large share of homes are that age. That gives full-height built-in bookshelves room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Where other trades come in
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight bookcase would leave.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Working from home is another reason. Shelves for books and files close to the desk make the day easier. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.
Built-in bookshelves can help with:
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
- Shelving that frames a window
- Low shelves children can reach
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
Near listed buildings like Leather Bottle Public House, less than half a mile north of the centre of Summerstown, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Before you hire any carpenter

- How parking will work on your street
How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.
Preparing the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
Arranging a design visit
It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Related advice
Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Summerstown?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.
My home in Summerstown is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
It’s possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
Will built-in bookshelves sag?
Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Let us know about heavy collections during the design visit.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you work outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Summerstown homes and built-in bookshelves
In the area around Summerstown, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Summerstown. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Wandsworth included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Summerstown, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
For a flat near Earlsfield station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
