Loft storage for your home in Merton

Why bespoke in Merton?

Ready-made furniture has to come up the loft stairs in one piece or flat-packed. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

Loft storage in Merton

We make each eaves cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and carcasses, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is carried up and fitted in your home in Merton. Most enquiries start with an empty dormer that could hold shelves and boxes piled on loft boards; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

In a loft room, walls, slopes and floors are rarely straight. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can be a surface for books or lamps. We agree the layout at the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Ask for a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Look at the insulation and any vents behind the knee wall
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Heavy items are best kept in the lower parts of the storage. That keeps the drawers running smoothly. We size the shelves for what you said you’d keep there.

Loft rooms can be warm in summer and cool in winter. A little ventilation helps. That keeps the storage and the paint in good order.

Loft storage in Merton: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 42% of the housing in the area around Merton, with about 19% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Wandle Valley Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Merton. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, the rest of London included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Merton is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

If you live in a flat close to Haydons Road station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like London Regional Transport Station, under half a mile north-west of the centre of Merton, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Southside House, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Merton is part of the London Borough of Merton, about 1 mile north-west of Wimbledon. Homes in Merton are part of the area we cover for loft storage, as part of our work in every London borough. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London.

Design visits and fitting in SW19 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Streets in the area include High Path, Pincott Road and Hayward Close, and we cover homes on all of them for loft storage. Merton is near the A24; on busy main roads, unloading eaves cupboards takes a little planning. Close by, we also work in Merton Abbey (1 mile east), South Wimbledon (1 mile north-west), Colliers Wood (1 mile east), Tooting Bec (1 mile north-east) and Summerstown (1 mile north). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Morden (2 miles south-west), Eastfields (2 miles east), Crooked Billet (2 miles west), Copse Hill (2 miles west), Mitcham (2 miles south-east) and Hackbridge (2 miles south-east).

Landmarks near Merton

In Merton, that includes homes near The Nelson Arms, Rutlish School and Wimbledon School of Art and the streets around them. Well-known places in the area include St George's Hospital (1.1 miles north-east) and Wandle Industrial Museum (1.2 miles south-east). Not far away are Merton Park Green Walks.

Your questions about loft storage in Merton

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Haydons Road station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make loft storage for a home in Merton?

Yes, Merton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the carcasses and drawers, and MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.
