Built-in bookshelves in South Wimbledon: what you get

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you choose. We fit across Merton and the rest of London. Most enquiries start with storage for children’s books and games and shelving that frames a window; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around South Wimbledon, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Living-room storage in South Wimbledon

The biggest shares of homes in the area around South Wimbledon were built before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 13 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central South Wimbledon. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around South Wimbledon (about 66%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that age normally have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use.

Living in a block of flats near Wimbledon station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Close to Wandle Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, and they can sag under a full load. We size each shelf for its span and load, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Why work with us in South Wimbledon

  • Built around your room
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing

Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

What you pay depends on:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase, and birch plywood grips its fixings well.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in South Wimbledon

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Wimbledon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wimbledon station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
