Sipson Built-in Bookshelves

Built-in bookshelves in Sipson: bookcases and shelving walls built into your home. We visit to measure and discuss the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Books with nowhere left to go

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Sipson?

Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Room for a record collection
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

For a family home near Cherry Lane Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How parking will work on your street

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Built-in bookshelves in Sipson

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and shelves that suit a period room.

Ceiling heights across London vary a lot, from tall period rooms to compact modern ones. In Sipson, as anywhere, we measure the height as carefully as the width, since it sets how tall built-in bookshelves can be. Each section is sized to fit the route into the room.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. We cover floors and doorways first. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Sipson

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Sipson?

Yes, we work across Hillingdon, Sipson included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Sipson?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

How deep should bookshelves be?

The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
  • Let us know about access early
  • Tell us where the heaviest things will go
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books

Leave a little air behind books on an external wall. Look out for damp signs early.

Put coasters under anything that holds water. Dry any spills quickly.

When you need someone else

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Decorating the rest of the room

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Cupboards below
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
