Built-in bookshelves in Hayes, Hillingdon

Planning built-in bookshelves for a home in Hayes? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • A room lined with books

Built-in bookshelves for your home in Hayes

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • 300+ projects completed

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or what to look for in a quote.

Built-in bookshelves in Hayes: what you get

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or ask their plumber about moving it. If your home has books with nowhere left to go and space for art books and records, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around Hayes, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

How to get a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page. The written quote follows the visit.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Hayes

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Hayes?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Hayes & Harlington station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. We usually keep some shelves fixed for strength, and the rest can be adjustable.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Let us know about parking and access at the design visit
  • Mention any radiator on the wall

Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.

Don’t load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the measuring visit.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Hayes

In the streets around Hayes, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Hayes Village Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Hayes. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Hillingdon is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Hayes. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Northolt Manor, about 3 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Close to Barra Hall Park? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
