What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

About our built-in bookshelves in Ruislip Manor

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether or have a plumber move it first. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about bowing shelves in an old bookcase and bare walls that could hold shelving.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Ruislip Manor, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Living-room storage in Ruislip Manor

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 60% of the housing in the area around Ruislip Manor, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Ruislip Manor. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 60% of homes in the streets around Ruislip Manor date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Paul, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Living in a block of flats near West Ruislip station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Ruislip Manor is within the London Borough of Hillingdon, about 1 mile north of Ruislip. We design and make built-in bookshelves for homes in Ruislip Manor. Ruislip Manor is one of the places in Hillingdon where we make built-in bookshelves.

We make built-in bookshelves across HA4 and HA5 for built-in bookshelves. Our area takes in homes on streets like Larne Road, Elm Avenue and Beech Avenue, along with the roads around them, whether you want built-in bookshelves or another piece made for the room. Ruislip Manor is near the A4180; on busy main roads, unloading built-in bookshelves takes a little planning. We also cover Ruislip (1 mile north), Ruislip Gardens (1 mile south), Ickenham (2 miles south-west) and Hillingdon (3 miles south-west). Other parts of Hillingdon we cover include Hayes (4 miles south), Yeading (3 miles south), Yiewsley (3 miles south), West Drayton (5 miles south-west), Yiewsley (5 miles south-west) and Cowley (4 miles south-west).

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Ruislip Manor?

For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Low shelves children can reach
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • A room lined with books
  • Shelving that frames a window

If you live near Church Field Gardens, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Ruislip Manor?

Yes, Ruislip Manor is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Ruislip Manor?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Arranging a design visit

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
