Built-in bookshelves in Hillingdon: what you get

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves packed two rows deep and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices.

Around Hillingdon, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. Built-in bookshelves can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions from Hillingdon

I live near West Drayton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Hillingdon?

Yes, Hillingdon is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and we plan the shelves around the architraves.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. We normally keep some shelves fixed for strength, with adjustable ones in between.

Why bespoke in Hillingdon?

Tall standalone bookcases still need fixing to the wall, so it’s already halfway to built in. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish, all planned for your room. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose us

  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 50% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Hillingdon, with about 25% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. What affects the price in Hillingdon

What you pay depends on:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Making good walls that can’t take fixings
  • Decorating the rest of the room

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
