Fitting day, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Post-war blocks often have shared stairwells and lifts, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for each. Tell us about any building rules on lifts or working hours during the design visit.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. We send a written quote for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

About our built-in bookshelves in Yiewsley

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. If your home has room for a record collection and wasted wall space around a door or window, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Many homes around Yiewsley date from the post-war decades. Post-war rooms tend to be squarer, with fewer alcoves and often no chimney breast. That makes a full wall of built-in bookshelves a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Some walls of that age are concrete or blockwork, and the fixings are matched to them.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
  • Making good walls that can’t take fixings
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Yiewsley homes and built-in bookshelves

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Yiewsley, with about 27% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Yiewsley include White Hart Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Purpose-built flats are home to about 40% of households in the area around Yiewsley, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a flat near Southall station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your home is one of the older houses near St Joseph the Worker & Dovetail Centre, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Yiewsley?

Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them, so people turn to bespoke shelving.

Built-in bookshelves can help with:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Shelves packed two rows deep

If you live near Northala Fields, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

What to check before you book

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Yiewsley

Is parking a problem for fitting in Yiewsley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Yiewsley?

Yes, Yiewsley is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.
