Gallows Corner Built-in Bookshelves

Built-in bookshelves in Gallows Corner: bookcases and shelving walls built into your home. Every piece is built in our workshop and fitted in your home, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • A bare wall above a doorway

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which may be too deep for paperbacks or too shallow for art books. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Built-in bookshelves in Gallows Corner: what you get

Bookshelves do not have to stop at a doorway or a window. A bookcase can wrap around a door, with shelves running over the top. It uses wall space that often goes to waste. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are space for art books and records and a home library or study.

A good part of the housing around Gallows Corner is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls in houses of that age are usually straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Gallows Corner homes and built-in bookshelves

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Gallows Corner were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 37%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Gallows Corner, Historic England’s list includes The Royal Liberty School (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Gallows Corner is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For families living near Royal Liberty School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Living in a block of flats near Gidea Park station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Hare Hall, about 0.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Gallows Corner

I live near Gidea Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Gallows Corner?

Yes, we work across Havering, Gallows Corner included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

How do you stop shelves from sagging?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

When you need someone else

Not everything around built-in bookshelves is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Cupboards below
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.
